Exchange Student Checklist ... Before Leaving the
_____ Turned in all of my school books and library books?
_____ Paid any fines I might have at the school or library?
_____ Cleaned out my school locker(s)? Thanked my school principal and all of my teachers and counselors for helping me?
_____ Found my passport and other important documents? Those I carry on the airplane - do not pack.
_____ Closed my bank account if I opened one?
_____ Arranged for my yearbook to be mailed to me back home and paid shipping charges to the person sending it?
_____ Paid my host family for the last phone bill or other outstanding loans from family or friends?
_____ Called my airline to see what the weight guidelines are (normally 50 pounds) and checked that my luggage is not too heavy for the airline? It may be cheaper to ship some things home – make sure you do this at your own expense.
_____ Cleaned out my room and thrown away what I’m not taking home? Please remember to leave your room as clean as it was when you came. Run the vacuum and dust before you go home as a courtesy to your host parents.
_____ Written “Thank You” notes to those who were special to me?
_____ Thought about how I wish to be remembered by my host family, school, and community? Have I found creative ways to express gratitude for their kindness? If you can afford it, a “thank you” family supper at a nice restaurant is nice – your treat. Ask your natural parents if that is possible.
_____ Gotten everyone’s email and home address so I can write them when I get home?
One last way to show appreciation to your school, host family and community is to write a Letter to the Editor in your local newspaper. Ask your host parents to help you find the website. In the letter, say who you are and list your home country. Remember to name and thank your family, school and community for all the wonderful experiences you have had here.
